Loving What You Do

Loving What You Do | Entrepreneur Tips | Business Tips | SBN Marketingpost by Stephanie Nelson

Valentine’s Day is this weekend, and the topic of love has been on my mind a lot lately. Given that this blog is about work and such, when I sat down to write today and started bandying about ideas, the quote that says something along the lines of “do what you love and you’ll never work another day” popped into my head.

In my opinion, one of the best things about owning your own business is getting to focus on what you love. You get to choose WHAT you do..and what you don’t do (which, to me, is just as important). You get to choose who you work WITH and FOR…and who you don’t (again – just as important in many ways).

Most everyone I know (including myself) has had at least one job that became absolutely toxic. You know the one. The one that makes you hate getting out of bed Monday through Friday, but has you bouncing through the day on the weekends. The one that makes you cry when you wake up, while you’re in the shower, while you’re driving to the job, while you’re driving home after work, and while you’re trying to go to sleep. The one where, whether it’s because of your boss, your coworkers, your clients, or the actual work you’re doing, you eventually hit that wall where you say, “I cannot do this for one. more. second.”

I can’t say that in the 9+ years I’ve been out on my own that I’ve ever felt like what I was doing WASN’T work. It is. It requires near-constant attention, and that’s tiresome and exhausting. Some days it’s hard – focus, motivation, etc can seem elusive. But I can say I’ve never loved doing what I do more. I’m blessed with clients I love and feel excited to work with. And who knew setting my own schedule and doing my work on my terms would make such a difference?!?!?!?!
