Instagram has announced a change coming to the way that external links are shared within Stories.
Currently, users are instructed to “Swipe Up” to get to links included in Stories. But with this change, the “Swipe Up” function will be removed and replaced by a new “Link” sticker option. This change is anticipated to take place by the end of August 2021.
Right now, the “Swipe Up” function is reserved for those with verified profiles and/or those with more than 10,000 followers. This new Link sticker option will be automatically applied to these accounts, but it will be rolling out in phases to ensure the links being shared are safe and not spreading misinformation or spam. Assuming this roll-out goes smoothly, the eventual goal is to allow access to the Link sticker option in Stories to all users, according to Vishal Shah, who was Instagram’s Head of Product when the comment was made back in June.
The benefits of the sticker option vs the swipe up option abound.
- It will give creators more presentation options to help drive traffic to their websites, by featuring them more prominently on the screen.
- It will help users further express themselves and share on Instagram what matters to them, much like the Donation, Music, and Poll stickers.
- Since users can toggle to different styles, resize the sticker, and place it anywhere on the story, it gives creators more control to give their links and stories optimal impact.
- It gives followers more room for engagement on an account’s Stories through reactions and replies to posts using the link sticker, thus giving creators more feedback on what’s working and what isn’t straight from their audience.
It will be interesting to see how this functionality performs upon initial rollout AND what happens if/when the functionality becomes available to all users.
