Instagram’s Bold Move: The New Vertical Grid Design

Instagram is shaking things up with a fresh design update that’s changing how profiles look and feel. The new vertical-aligned sizing and grid layout is designed to make the platform more visually engaging and user-friendly for creators, brands, and everyday users.

The most noticeable change is the grid format. Traditionally, Instagram’s grid displayed posts in a uniform square layout, with images cropped to fit the classic 1:1 ratio. The updated vertical alignment introduces taller 4:5 image ratio, allowing content to fill more screen space. This change gives users a stronger visual impact as they scroll through profiles or explore tabs. For content creators, this adjustment means the opportunity to showcase more details in photos or videos without compromising on quality or cropping key elements out of frame.

The update also aligns with broader trends favoring vertical content. Short-form videos and full-screen experiences, such as Instagram Reels and Stories, have become some of the platform’s most popular features. By incorporating taller image and video formats into the main grid, Instagram creates a seamless transition between different types of content while optimizing for mobile-first viewing habits.

Of the change, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said: “We started with the tall grid because most photos and videos that are uploaded to Instagram at this point are vertical and rectangles do a better job showing off those photos and videos. That said, I know some of you spend a lot of time tweaking your grids and this blew all of that up, so we’re going to improve the ability to customize those thumbnails to make it easier to get back to a place you’re happy with.”

For brands and influencers, this presents a fresh way to attract audiences. Taller visuals stand out more prominently, offering better storytelling opportunities for campaigns, product launches, or personal branding efforts. However, this shift also calls for an adjustment in content strategy. Creators may need to rethink how they crop, design, and plan their posts to take full advantage of the extra space.

While this new feature may take some getting used to, it represents a step forward in how we share and consume visual media on Instagram. Whether you’re a casual user or someone building a brand, the expanded grid format could inspire creativity and open doors for more meaningful engagement.
