LinkedIn boasts more than 756 million users in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. But harnessing it as an outlet proves to be a struggle for many. Here are a few of SBN Marketing’s tips on taking advantage of a LinkedIn presence – as a business and on a personal level.
- Remember that LinkedIn is a PROFESSIONAL outlet. Be mindful of what you share here. If it’s not something you’d talk about in the office or with colleagues, don’t post it on LinkedIn.
- LinkedIn acts as a search engine in and of itself. When people are looking for business-related services and/or new employees, many times this is where they’ll search. Make sure your personal bio and posts, as well as your company page information and posts, contain the keywords/terms you’d like to be found for when other users perform a search.
- LinkedIn also offers another property that can be indexed on Google, Bing, and the other major search engines. Our experience has shown company pages get indexed for keywords in a relatively short amount of time – if there is a short amount of time in SEO terms. These updates give you the opportunity to easily put out there exactly what the search engines look for: frequently updated, keyword-rich content.
- As an employee of a company, you can benefit from LinkedIn while also helping your employer. According to LinkedIn, employees have, on average, 10 times more direct connections on LinkedIn than a company page has followers. By updating your status with posts that tag your employer’s company page and use keywords your company is trying to show for, you’re also: (1) expanding the audience that sees the name of your employer, (2) increasing the likelihood of clicks/visits to your employer’s company page, and (3) potentially helping to boost the company in searches on LinkedIn AND in the search engines.
Needless to say, you could quickly become the company hero by doing this. But at the same time, you’ll be posting about the hands-on industry experience you’re getting. So if it comes time for you to change jobs, you will have built the LinkedIn piece of your personal brand in the process.
- Be strategic with your posts and getting them seen. Yes, including keywords and search terms is important. But don’t forget hashtags and mentions. Relevant, niche-specific hashtags included in your posts will get you seen by more users AND get you included in more conversations. Mentioning someone in your post (as long as it’s relevant to the post) will also get more eyes on what you’re saying. But please note that with both of these items, relevance was mentioned. Relevance is key. Do not spam folks with random hashtags and mentions unless you’re looking to become the pariah of your network.
